Male Depression Sufferers often suffer in Silence
Men suffering from depression might refuse to accept that they are depressed. If you ask them, they are more likely to tell you that they rather tired and worn out, what with all the tension at work. While feeling out of sorts is not a sure sign of depression, when it is persistent, it could indeed be a symptom of such a problem.
The feeling of sadness or feeling out of sorts could itself prevent the male sufferer from going to a doctor. Who wants to be seen as a sad man! As a result, male depression sufferers typically do not get timely treatment.
If you are someone close to the person, like his wife, you can usually pick out the symptoms. Persistent feeling of tiredness by a person who was usually very active could signal that something is wrong. Others might begin to spend a lot more time napping, sleeping much more that they used to do.
Withdrawal from normal activities is another typical symptom that is common to both men and women. In the case of men, however, this can often be more pronounced. They might begin to spend more time playing video games, or at their computers, instead of going out with friends or taking part in sports, for example.
It is the noticeable change from earlier patterns that could signal a problem. Formerly they might have been seriously interested in something, but now nothing seems to interest them. For a person close to the man, the change will be quite evident.
Reasons for getting depressed are also generally common among both men and women. It can be seasonal, as when you get depressed during winter and come out of it in spring. Or it might have something to do with the situation at workplaces or in personal relationships. Men do not typically talk about these things as openly as women do. So it is harder to get them to open up, talk about it, and get some relief.
If you can, try to make them do exactly that, talk about the things that are bothering them. Then talk about the options open to improve things. Often, the talking itself can provide significant relief. And where possible, get them to the doctor. There are treatments available for depression, including male depression.
