Life on the green: How to avoid common golfing injuries

aidEveryone knows that a hobby is just as important as any other aspect of life, a way to escape from stress and strains of work and home, and to relax and just ‘be’ for a while. If you find your hobby is causing you injury and pain, what do you do?

Most sporting activities carry the risk of injury and pain, this is simply a fact of life, but the most important thing is to find ways to minimise the possibility of injury, and hopefully avoid it altogether.

If you are a golf fan, avid or simply a recreational player, you will be only too aware of the common injuries which can occur over time. These can be niggling and not that troublesome, or they can be debilitating and potentially hobby-ending. Luckily, here at Neurobalance Chiropractic, we are experienced in recognising the common golf injuries, and treating them effectively. Northern Beaches chiropractor, Dr Rachael Veronesi, understands the upsetting nature of a golfing injury, when you find this to be your release and escape from life’s stresses, and can help you overcome any potential pitfalls.

With the Australian Open on the horizon, more and more people are taking to the green for a spot of golf, and could potentially experience the following injuries over time – back pain, elbow tendonitis, golfer’s elbow, knee pain, rotator cuff tears or injuries, or hip injuries, to name just a few. These are often caused by incorrect posture, or incorrect swing, which is a cause of many different types of common golfing injury. The explosive nature of a golf swing can put pressure on many different joints and muscles in the body, and the repetitive movements involved can cause problems over time.

Back pain is perhaps one of the most common golfing injuries, mainly because golfers spend a lot of their time in a stooped-over position, and when you don’t have the correct position to start with, and a poor posture, you could be putting yourself in the firing line for problems. Making sure you warm up adequately before playing, and checking your posture is the best way forward.

Tendonitis and golfer’s elbow are down to the swing movement, so getting it right is the first step to avoiding injury. At Neurobalance Chiropractic, we offer a free golf swing evaluation, to make sure you are working with the right foundation. This can go a long way to minimising and even eradicating injury related to improper swing.

Rotator cuff tears can be very painful indeed, and take a while to heal. Again, you need a correct swing, and to always check the ground before you do take that movement, because hitting a stone or rock with your club at speed can cause impact to shoot up your arm and cause serious problems in this area.

Understanding stretching exercises, doing them regularly and properly, warming up your muscles adequately, standing in the correct posture, limiting play to avoid over-use, and always making sure your golf swing is correct, is the best road to go down to avoid golfing injuries.
